Follow These 4 Tips To Avoid Indoor Allergies This Fall & Winter
a
Although winters in Alabama are fairly mild, temperatures can still plummet into the lower 40s and upper 30s. Compared to our scorching summers, the cooler months can certainly send chills down one’s spine!
Fall and winter are great for cuddling up on the couch with a cup of cider, but as you spend more and more time indoors, you may notice the air inside your house becoming stale. However, you don’t have to sacrifice indoor air quality to stay comfortable! Check out these tips on how to keep yourself and your family allergy-free all season long.
Skip The Aerosol
Air freshener sprays are a common household staple. However, aerosol sprays do not actually eliminate foul odors—and they may play a role in degrading the ozone layer! Many sprays contain chemicals such as formaldehyde, so even though the word “fresh” is usually plastered across the product, the actual ingredients are far from it. In fact, aerosol air fresheners can worsen respiratory conditions such as asthma. Consider using essential oils and all-natural cleaners instead!
Clean Thoroughly
Especially because you are likely to spend more time indoors during the cooler months, you’ll want to make sure your house is free of the dust and pet dander that can accumulate over time. Mold can also invade your home during the wet winter season, which can cause uncomfortable symptoms such as itchy eyes, coughing, sneezing and headaches. Keep allergens at bay by:
- Cleaning drapes and bedding once a week.
- Vacuuming your carpets twice a week.
- Making sure to wash any blankets your furry friends may sleep on.
- Eliminating clutter so dust and allergens have fewer places to settle.
Change Those Filters
There are only so many allergens your filter can trap before it reaches capacity. If you don’t change your air filter about every 30 days, they will be able to hold less and less material as time goes on, and eventually, allow contaminants to pass through altogether. These toxins will then circulate around your home along with the air you and your family breathe! Some irritants include dust, pet dander, mold spores and dirt.
Let Fresh Air In
Even when it’s chilly outside, opening the windows every once in a while can do a great deal of good! Fresh air will be able to enter your home, and irritants, along with stale air, will move out. You can also utilize built-in appliances such as the fan above your stove to remove smoke and other contaminants that would otherwise struggle to exit your home during the wintertime.
